1. Purpose of the study
This online survey is conducted as part of an academic term paper in the seminar Language Contact Constellations at Universität Hamburg.
The aim of the study is to investigate how speakers of Latvian perceive and assess the linguistic origin of selected lexical items used in contemporary Latvian. In particular, the study examines the extent to which participants' perceptions of the linguistic origin of a word correspond to its actual linguistic and historical origin.
This survey is not a language test. There are no right or wrong answers. The study is concerned solely with your personal perceptions and linguistic intuitions.
2. Voluntary participation
Participation in this survey is voluntary. You may stop participating at any time without giving a reason and without any disadvantages.
Participation is limited to persons aged 18 or older.
3. What data are collected?
The survey collects only information that is relevant to the purposes of the study. This includes, in particular:
- age group
- country of residence
- information about participants' native language(s)
- information about languages spoken and self-assessed language proficiency
- information about the frequency with which different languages are used in everyday life
- perceptions and assessments of selected Latvian words
- answers to general questions concerning perceptions of linguistic origin and language contact
The survey does not collect names, email addresses, telephone numbers, postal addresses, or other directly identifying contact information.
Please also avoid providing information in the open-text fields that could identify you or another person.
4. Anonymity and confidentiality
The survey is conducted using the LimeSurvey platform provided by Universität Hamburg.
The survey is configured so that responses are collected and analysed anonymously. IP addresses are not stored together with the survey responses, and responses are not linked to personal contact information.
Because the survey is conducted anonymously, individual responses cannot be attributed to a specific participant after the survey has been completed. Consequently, it is generally not possible to delete an individual response after submission.
The results will be used exclusively for academic purposes as part of the term paper and will be analysed in aggregated form. Individual participants will not be identifiable in the term paper.
5. Technical processing
The survey is technically administered through the LimeSurvey instance provided by Universität Hamburg. The LimeSurvey instances of Universität Hamburg are operated on servers of the Regional Computing Centre of Universität Hamburg (RRZ).
For the technical operation, security, and troubleshooting of the system, Universität Hamburg may process technical log data. Such data may include, for example, IP address, date and time of access, accessed webpage, browser type, and operating system.
These technical log data are separate from the anonymously collected survey responses. According to the information provided by Universität Hamburg, such technical log data are stored only for a limited period of time.
6. Purpose limitation and disclosure
The survey data collected will be used exclusively for the academic research described above.
The survey data will not be disclosed to commercial companies or used for commercial purposes.
The results may be analysed and presented as part of the term paper. Any presentation of the results will be in anonymised and/or aggregated form only.
7. Data storage
The anonymous research data collected through the survey will be stored for the duration of the research project and the analysis of the term paper.
As the research data are collected anonymously, it will not be possible to attribute the data to individual participants after completion of the survey.
Technical log data processed by Universität Hamburg are subject to the applicable retention periods of the university.
8. Legal basis
The processing of the data collected for this study is based on your voluntary consent pursuant to Article 6(1)(a) of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
9. Your rights
You generally have the rights provided for by the General Data Protection Regulation, including the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and the right to object, insofar as these rights are applicable in the individual case.
As the survey is conducted anonymously, however, it is not possible to attribute individual responses to a specific participant after completion of the survey.
